Atlanta Criminal Defense Attorney Noah Pines recently served on the panel of experts for television station WSB-TV Channel 2s primetime special titled Being Bullied. The special was posted on the news stations website on March 16, 2014. As the featured legal expert for Being Bullied, Attorney Pines answered questions from Channel 2s Justin Farmer and Jovita Moore, from the audience members who were present and from individuals who asked questions through social media. As seen in the Being Bullied special, Attorney Pines mainly answers questions about what legal steps can be taken after a child is bullied. The lawyer explained that there are a couple of ways that parents can take legal actionthey can go after the offender by filing criminal charges (if they apply) and have the matter handled through the juvenile court system, or they can file a civil lawsuit against the bullys parents.
In the news special, Attorney Pines also discussed what the level of liability is for schools where bullying occurs. He stated that there were law changes in 2010 that helped to better define bullying, and also to create stricter protocols for the school system. Because of these changes, local school boards in Georgia are now required to set up policies for bullying prevention, investigation and parent notification, he said in the special. Mr. Pines noted that a parent can only sue the school system for bullying if the bullying occurred at school, and the school did not take adequate action to prevent the incident. The attorney also discussed other topics related to bullying. In fact, there were so many questions that Attorney Pines was asked to stay longer and answer more questions following the broadcast.
The Being Bullied special incorporated various elements, including stories of students who had been bullied, stories from former bullies, information about what schools are doing address issues of bullying, insight from legislators and more. The live broadcast was conducted at Ridgeview Charter Middle School, where students have become actively involved in the planning of anti-bullying programs.
